New scientific tests on the Shroud of Turin, which went on display Saturday in a special TV appearance introduced by the Pope, dates the cloth to ancient times, challenging earlier experiments dating it only to the Middle Ages. Pope Francis sent a special video message to the televised event in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy, which coincided with Holy Saturday, when Catholics mark the period between Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
The Vatican, tiptoeing carefully, has never claimed that the foot linen cloth was, as some believers claim, used to cover Christ after he was taken from the cross 2, years ago. Francis, reflecting that careful Vatican policy, on Saturday called the cloth, which is kept in a climate-controlled case , an “icon” — not a relic.
Italy [email protected] Abstract. The TS (Turin Shroud) is a linen cloth which enveloped the dead body of a tortured and crucified man that.
Some claim the image depicts Jesus of Nazareth and the fabric is the burial shroud in which he was wrapped after crucifixion. The existence of the shroud was first securely attested in or when a local bishop wrote that an unnamed artist had confessed that it was a forgery. Radiocarbon dating of a sample of the fabric is consistent with this date of origin. The artifact is kept in the Cathedral of Turin , which is located next to a complex of buildings composed of the Royal Palace of Turin , the Chapel of the Holy Shroud located inside the Royal Palace and formerly connected to the Cathedral , and the Palazzo Chiablese in Turin , Piedmont , northern Italy.
In , three radiocarbon dating tests dated a corner piece of the shroud from the Middle Ages , between the years and Some shroud researchers have challenged the dating, arguing the results were skewed by the introduction of material from the Middle Ages to the portion of the shroud used for radiocarbon dating. The image on the shroud is much clearer in black-and-white negative —first observed in —than in its natural sepia color.
A variety of methods have been proposed for the formation of the image, but the actual method used has not yet been conclusively identified. The shroud is rectangular, measuring approximately 4. The cloth is woven in a three-to-one herringbone twill composed of flax fibrils. Its most distinctive characteristic is the faint, brownish image of a front and back view of a naked man with his hands folded across his groin.

Facebook Twitter Email. CNN — When she was 24, Emanuela Marinelli was walking near the Vatican in Rome when she caught a glimpse of a “beautiful face of Christ” printed on a souvenir in the window of a shop run by nuns. The image, she said, stood out among the other items for sale — a kitschy array of ashtrays with the face of the Pope and plastic representations of Jesus on the cross, with eyes that opened and closed.
Transfixed, she entered the shop and asked a nun who had painted the original version, only to be told there was no artist, it was a photograph of the Shroud of Turin. I left the shop skeptical, and didn’t think any more of it. Today, Marinelli is one of the world’s most prominent “shroudies” — people who believe that the 14’5” x 3’7” linen cloth, which bears an image of what appears to be the body of a man, is in fact the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth.

Italy’s football federation FIGC has set August 20 as the deadline for finishing the current season, which is still suspended due to the COVID pandemic, and it wants to start next season on September 1. The FIGC still intends to finish the top three divisions of the professional league — Serie A, Serie B and Serie C — but the semi-professional and amateur leagues below that will be abandoned for the season, it said in a statement on Wednesday.
A decision on the women’s Serie A league will be taken after the FIGC has examined whether the clubs could implement strict health measures and whether the FIGC could provide financial contributions. Serie A has been suspended since March 9 and the final say on whether it can re-start rests with the government which has set May 28 as the decision day. All matches will be played without spectators. There are still 12 rounds of games to play plus four outstanding matches which had previously been postponed.
Juventus, chasing a ninth successive title, lead the table by one point from Lazio. The federation also decided that if any of the top three divisions should restart and then stop again, the FIGC would have to devise a shorter, alternative way of concluding the league such as a playoff system. This would settle promotion, relegation and qualification for European competitions in the case of Serie A.
The FIGC said that, if it was not possible to complete the season even with playoffs, it would devise a coefficient system to settle the outcome. Serie C presents the biggest logistical challenge as it features 60 clubs, divided into three regional groups, with many in difficult financial situations. Home China World World Europe. World Europe.
